Stuff Worth Repeating

---IN MEMORIAM---

Norah Pierson was a wonderful, powerful and totally unique goldsmith whom we had the luck of knowing for the last twenty years. We did not know her intimately, but I know we shared some common aesthetics in the world of gems. These are her words................. -----

''It takes a long time to amuse a stone''

STONES HAVE A SENSE OF DIGNITY
GREATER THAN THAT OF KINGS,
A SENSE OF HONOR
STRONGER THAN THAT OF FRIENDS.
A SENSE OF HUMOR
MORE SUBTLE THAN THE WEATHER,
IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO AMUSE A STONE.

FIRST YOU MUST CAPTURE ONE
AND CARRY IT AWAY,
RUB IT, OIL IT, CARVE IT, ADMIRE IT, BUILD WITH IT.....
THE STONE WILL NOT COMPLAIN.

IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO AMUSE A STONE.
BIG STONES LIE IN WAIT,
JUST FOR LAUGHS.
AND THEN YOU MUST WAIT,
AND YEARS AFTER YOU ARE GONE, BURIED UNDER YET ANOTHER STONE,
THEN MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, THE STONE WILL BE AMUSED.

--- Harry Winston speaks! --

-- The meaning of Perfection --

This was passed on to me by a customer. We sometimes find ourselves suggesting that a customer buys a synthetic stone, because their expectations are unrealistic. Read what Harry Winston had to say on the topic. --

--As the world around you becomes mass-produced into monotony, we ask you to remember this:

Nothing perfect ever rolls off an assembly line.

Perfectly symetrical, yes...and perfectly attractive, but
nothing perfect.

Perfect is breathtaking.
Perfect is inimitable.

Perfect comes from staying awake until 2 am deciding whether to tilt a stone one hundredth of an inch this way or that.

Perfect is not rational.
Perfect is tempestuous.
Perfect hurts!

Your brain doesn't know perfect. Nor your eye. The only part of you that knows perfect is the exquisitely painful way your heart beats in its presence.
That part was born knowing perfect.

What will you own that's perfect? What impossibly beautiful thing waits to become yours?

Find it.
Make it yours.
Bring it out.

Because when you do, your perfection will make the world's heart hurt.

SALVADOR DALI SPEAKS!!

-- Laurie, Geoffrey and I were visiting a wonderful retrospective of Dali's work in London a few years ago and this quote of his really stood out. So many of the large egos in our business complain furiosly about being ripped off.....here is the Ringmasters take on the subject!!--

'' Ideas are meant to be copied.

I have enough ideas to sell them on.

I prefer that they are stolen so that I don't actually have to use them myself!!''

Salvador Dali (1904-1989)
